Governor Cuervo y Valde's did not follow Spain's legal code by not informing the King about the villa. Valdes wanted the governorship to be permanent and boldly requested the Duke of Alburquerque to donate bells, ornaments, chalices, missals, images and jewels for the new church.... the King was not happy.
Don Juan de Ornate, governor and captain general of the Spanish Kingdom of New Mesico arrived in the Middle Rio Grand Valley in 1598. It was a fertile area but the Pueblo Indians claimed the land and were not friendly, so he moved on North.
